Eiji Kanehira is a surgeon specializing in advanced endoscopic surgery in such digestive organs as stomach, colorectal, gallbladder, spleen, pancreas, endoluminal, and so on. He started endoscopic surgery in 1991 while he was a clinical fellow at the department of surgery of Tuebingen University, Germany. There he learned not only general endoscopic surgery but also a special technique, transanal endoscopic microsurgery (TEM) supervised by Professor Gerhard Buess. Eiji Kanehira introduced TEM in Japan and spread it nationwide. As he was pioneering endoscopic surgery, he was invited by more than 60 hospitals in Japan to perform live surgery demonstrations. So was he in foreign countries for 7 live operations. Apart from his clinical practice, he has been engaged to educate young surgeons. His way of teaching has been very well accepted and he was selected as a member of education committee of JSES. He conducted more than 70 training courses for endoscopic surgery. He was nominated as the chief coordinator to produce the official training course of JSES. Today he also held a private training course at his institute in Ageo, Japan, where young surgeons form all over Japan come to learn the advanced endoscopic techniques. Now Eiji Kanehira is directing a private community hospital established in February 2012 in Soka City, Japan. This hospital has an Endoscopic Surgery Center, where experts work together to perform high quality endoscopic surgery.
