Biography

Luigi is a Senior Lecturer and Principal Investigator (Tenure-Track) at the School of Medicine and serves on the Technology Committee of the European Association for Endoscopic Surgery (EAES), since 2021. He completed his PhD and postdoctoral research at the Biorobotics Institute in Pisa, Italy, before joining the University of Dundee in 2011. Initially, he served as a Project Coordinator and Senior Post-Doc for CODIR, a project funded by an European Research Council (ERC) Advanced Grant. Subsequently, he was a Co-Investigator on CARPE, an ERC Proof of Concept Grant project inspired by his concept. Luigi has received several awards, including the prestigious Surgical Innovation Award sponsored by Covidien in Baltimore (2013), the runner-up prize for the Emerging Technology Award in Boston (2016) at the SAGES Congress, USA, and the award for the best innovative contribution during the Technology Symposium in the Amazing Technologies section at the EAES in Rome (2023). His research focuses on the development of soft materials for smart endorobots. He was awarded the Dundee Venture Competition 2020 (staff category) for his proposal of a low-cost and disposable soft colonoscope. Luigi‘s research has been funded by the EPSRC and Scottish Enterprise, facilitating the commercialization of his research findings through the spin-out company, Softech Robotics. He is the winner of the Scotland’s Life Sciences annual awards in the “Innovation – Health Technology” category, 2024.
